Surgically Assisted Orthodontics in Carnegie Hill, NYC

Surgically assisted orthodontics, also referred to as surgically assisted osteogenic orthodontics, is sometimes needed when the jaws are not positioned correctly and bite correction cannot be achieved with orthodontic treatment alone.
Surgically assisted orthodontics helps patients achieve a healthy and proper function of bites, resulting in effective chewing, speaking and breathing — as well as an aesthetically pleasing smile.

How will I know if I need surgically
assisted orthodontics?

The need for surgically assisted orthodontics will be determined by your orthodontist. There are symptoms or signs you could be experiencing yourself that may lead you to an orthodontist who will determine your need through an examination, including 3D imaging to see underlying jaw structures. These issues may include:
  • Difficulty chewing, speaking and/or breathing
  • A receding chin
  • A protruding jaw
  • Jaw pain
  • Deep bite
  • Significantly flared front teeth
Poor alignment of the upper and lower jaws can lead to numerous issues, ranging from trouble with chewing and speaking — to TMJ syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea. Using a combination of corrective surgery and orthodontic appliances, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in conjunction with an orthodontist can help mitigate alignment issues.

What is oral and maxillofacial surgery?

Oral surgery refers specifically to procedures performed on the mouth. Maxillofacial surgery covers a wide range of procedures involving the jaw and other facial structures. Since these structures are so closely related, many common procedures overlap, which is why specialists must be experts in all aspects of their field. Some of the surgically assisted orthodontics procedures that require an oral and maxillofacial surgeon include:

  • Orthognathic surgery. Orthognathic surgery (corrective jaw surgery), is primarily known for treating speech problems, over bites, underbites, and aesthetic issues such as a protruding jaw or small chin. Performed in an operating room under general anesthesia, orthognathic surgery is commonly performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in collaboration with an orthodontist. Careful coordination is essential to ensure the teeth will fit correctly after the surgery.
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) repair. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the point where your lower jaw connects to the upper jaw and skull. Disorders at this junction lead to jaw clicking, stiffness, pain, and headaches. Corrective treatments, which may include surgery, focus on restoring a complete and uninterrupted range of motion to the TMJ.
  • Sleep Apnea treatment. Patients with OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) are also beneficiaries of the improved skeletal jaw position and better airway passages resulting from orthognathic surgery. NYC Sleep Well is our sister practice at Park Smiles NYC that offers comprehensive diagnoses and treatment of OSA, including sleep studies
  • Wisdom tooth removal. Since the wisdom teeth grow in after the other teeth have fully formed and are set in place, and there is often not enough room for them, they can often cause pain, infection, or other serious problems. Early removal of the wisdom teeth can help prevent many problems down the road.
