The Carriere Motion Appliance

If you have misaligned teeth, fixed braces or clear aligner therapy with Invisalign are typically recommended. However, severe malocclusions can sometimes mean that these are not an option without surgery or tooth extraction to achieve an ideal outcome. The Carriere Motion Appliance is an innovative device that corrects misaligned teeth on either side of the upper arch, thereby facilitating the process of braces or aligners and reducing the need of extractions or surgery.

The Carriere Motion Appliance is an innovative device that corrects misaligned teeth on either side of the upper arch, thereby facilitating the process of braces or aligners and reducing the need of extractions or surgery.

How does the Carriere Motion Appliance work?

Treatment with the Carriere Motion Appliance involves the use of an appliance that attaches to the canine tooth and second to last molar on each side of your mouth. A tooth on each side of the lower arch is used as an anchor and elastic bands will connect the anchor teeth to the appliance. The bands create a uniform force that rotates and straightens the first molars, while pulling the entire segment between the canine and first molar into proper alignment.
Using this advanced orthodontic technology, the Carriere Motion Appliance ensures a fast and effective treatment. The treatment typically takes three to four months, cutting a significant amount of time off traditional orthodontic procedures.

Cone Beam Computed
Tomography (CBCT)

Imaging of the dentofacial structures is an essential diagnostic tool as part of comprehensive orthodontic treatment. At Park Smiles NYC, we use state-of-the-art 3D Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) that allows us a comprehensive view of the dentofacial structures, including the soft tissue structures that were previously difficult or impossible to evaluate. Unlike traditional medical CT scans, the CBCT radiation dose is significantly less (about 150 to 200 times less radiation).

The advanced CBCT imaging allows us to:
  • Analyze the airway that may indicate the possibility of sleep apnea or other sleep disturbances.
  • Detect pattern and rate of facial growth, including any subtle asymmetry.
  • Detect abnormalities, including impacted third molars (wisdom teeth) and abnormal eruption.
  • Predict with confidence the limitations of orthodontic and surgical movements.
  • Accurately evaluate the jaw joints (TMJs).
  • Assess damage to traumatized bone or teeth.
  • Assess the quality and site of bone structure for future dental implants.
  • Determine the maturation and growth potential of the dentofacial structures.
  • Precisely determine the root positioning to allow accurate orthodontic correction.
  • Accurately measure anatomical structures, such as the thickness of the upper palatal shelf to help determine optimal sites for Temporary Anchorage Device placements.

CBCT images allow us to fully, accurately and confidently diagnose and treat any malocclusion presented by patients of any age. CBCT imaging is the new revolution in dentistry, especially for orthodontics, which has positively affected treatment outcomes.

Temporary Anchorage
Device (TAD)

Oftentimes, braces or clear aligners like Invisalign can alone deliver great results in orthodontic treatment. However, in some cases, there may be a need for an “anchorage point” for a pushing and pulling force to help facilitate movements that can’t be achieved otherwise. In the past, bulky, unsightly and uncomfortable headgear was the go-to treatment in many of these cases. Thankfully, today, there’s a much easier and more effective alternative: the Temporary Anchorage Device (TAD).
An orthodontic TAD is a tiny dental implant that looks like a mini screw that’s temporarily placed through the gum tissue and into the jawbone. TADs are usually made of titanium alloy, which is a durable, safe, and biocompatible material. Once the TADs are in place, they serve as an anchor, which means they’re a fixed point that can be used to provide force to shift the teeth in the desired direction. With the TAD, your teeth can be moved in ways that weren’t possible in the past, allowing treatment of more complex cases. The TAD lets your orthodontist create a customized system for exerting pressure that’s specifically tailored to your smile needs.
Because TADs give orthodontists the ability to achieve more complicated tooth movements than ever before, they can help patients avoid orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery). They can also reduce treatment time by moving the teeth more efficiently. Some patients will have their temporary anchorage devices for several months, while others will have TADs for the duration of their orthodontic treatment.
